Synopsis

When novelist Ohm Bauman retreats to a remote inn to scatter his parents’ ashes, he is consumed by tales of a witch haunting the honeymoon suite. Disturbing visions and a shocking disappearance forces him to confront dark corners of his past. Hokum proves that effective horror does not need to reinvent the wheel when strong execution is enough. Damian McCarthy crafts a tense, atmospheric haunted house story about a grieving novelist, played against type by Adam Scott, who travels to rural Ireland to scatter his parents’ ashes and finds himself trapped in a chilling supernatural mystery. McCarthy excels at building dread through eerie production design, claustrophobic spaces, sharp editing, and exceptional sound design, delivering jump scares that feel earned rather than cheap. Scott’s cold, restrained performance adds emotional weight, while the film’s middle stretch features some of its strongest and most nerve-wracking sequences. Though the final act loses a bit of momentum by overexplaining its mythology, Hokum remains a gripping, old-school ghost story that prioritizes scares, atmosphere, and craftsmanship over unnecessary genre reinvention.
